Two Faces of She

The only sound heard
was the slapping of the board
on the clear water
So close the ships
stealing past in the blackness
that the staves flew short
of becoming entangled
Two wooden women
carved from the same entity
yet casting no recognition
One reaching
weighted with stones
One breaching
a painted eye
bent only on the safety
of her return
a tree falsely lent
in two directions.
