Green Piece I

Once the whole world
was a park.  It resounded
with nature before we took
it apart like a jig saw puzzle,
before we isolated those
little islands of splendor and
proceeded to trash the rest.
Now the birds peck at concrete
and deer are splattered on
bumpers. Now we rush to see
what will be extinct and hope
chlorophyll does not evaporate
with the ozone. Where natives
camped we dig to disclose
again what they knew and
we so indiscreetly severed.
